However, late into season one’s run, following the rise of Hydra, things became darker, S.H.E.I.L.D. becoming an agency working in the shadows; the quality of the show improving thereafter.
Season two and three also featured some of the show’s darker stories, yet failed to reach a wider audience, ABC deciding to renew the show but moving from 8pm on Tuesdays to 10pm.
With the later time-slot, head of Marvel Jeph Loeb is hoping to add further “edge” and “grit” to the show. He told CBR: "By going to 10 o'clock, we're going to be taking on just a little bit more edge, a little bit more grit.
"The show is pretty violent for something at 9 o'clock, but when we get to 10 o'clock, we're going to be just a little hair of something that I think people are going to really enjoy.”
Already, Marvel TV has announced that Jason O’Mara will be playing the new director of S.H.E.I.L.D. in the show, while Ghost Rider will also debut in the show.
