From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

An ambitious group of architects have launched a crowdfunding campaign in the hope of building a lifesize replica of Lord of the Rings city Minas Tirith, the heavily-fortified capital of Gondor.

Jonathan Wilson and his colleagues are “fully aware of the scale of [their] ambition,” and are seeking £1.85 billion for the project, which would be divided for land, labour and materials.

The campaign has a multi-tiered reward system, with investors who cough up large amounts getting their own houses in the city and even being declared Lord or Lady of it with use of a horse-drawn carriage.

Sadly it might be a bit of a pipe-dream though, as they only have 60 days to raise the funds and are currently on £471 (all money will be returned if the goal isn’t met).

“We are an ambitious team of architects and structural engineers who are passionate about creating a beautiful, inspirational and fully-functioning replica of Peter Jackson's depiction of Minas Tirith, as seen in his Lord of the Rings films," Wilson wrote on IndieGoGo.

"We all share a love of Tolkien's work, and a desire to challenge the common perception of community and architecture. We believe that, in realising Minas Tirith, we can create not only the most remarkable tourist attraction on the planet, but also a wonderfully unique place to live and work.”

The crowdfunding campaign is even more ambitious than that of Pornhub, which is currently tyying to raise $3.4 million so it can shoot a porn film in space.
