From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Matt Damon's comments about sexual abuse in the entertainment industry have officially landed him in more hot water.

Since he voiced his thoughts, activists have started a petition on social networking site Care2 to have his cameo cut from the star-studded, Sandra Bullock-led Ocean's 8 cut.

The petition, directed towards Ocean's 8 producers George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, has over 13,000 signatures supporting Damon's removal from the film.

In the petition, Damon's interview where he said he'd work with people accused of sexual assault on a "case-by-case" basis is cited and described as "gross."

“Damon’s inclusion (in the movie) would trivialise the serious nature of the charges against sexual abusers like Weinstein — a show of massive disrespect for the brave women speaking out," it reads.

The note also says keeping Damon in the movie would "lack of accountability for sexual harassment in the workplace that four in ten American women experience."

One of the 47-year-old actor's recent controversial comments was, “We’re going to have to figure — you know, there’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right?”

He added, "Both of those behaviours need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn’t be conflated, right?”

Although he denies it, Damon allegedly helped to kill a Harvey Weinstein harassment story that was due to come out in 2004.

But he has admitted that he knew Weinstein harassed actress Gwyneth Paltrow decades ago and continued to work with him.
