From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Glasgow Film Festival has secured a coup for its ninth edition next month. It will stage the first UK public screening of the Hollywood epic Cloud Atlas.

The film will screen at the festival on 17 February, allowing ticket holders to see it a day before the official UK premiere in London on 18 February.

Parts of the film, which is based on David Mitchell’s Booker-nominated novel, were shot in Glasgow, including a scene on the Clackmannanshire Bridge. The city’s hills and streets also stand in for 1970s San Francisco and modern-day London.

Brad Pitt’s World War Z and Under the Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson were also shot in the Scottish city in the last two years, bringing in around £5.5million.

Hooray for Glollywood? Yes, but only if the weather improves. When Halle Berry filmed her scenes for Cloud Atlas in September 2011 she was photographed hugging a hot water bottle between takes.
