Cultural Life: Lone Scherfig, film director
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Films
Jacques Audiard's 'A Prophet' and Michael Haneke's 'The White Ribbon'. Both are masterpieces and far stronger than any major recent American films.
Books
At the moment Rose Tremain's very wonderful and very different novels. But last week Ian McEwan's 'Saturday'. I think I've read his book 'On Chesil Beach' five times.
Music
Mainly what my 15-year-old daughter decides to play. I tend to escape the room less when she plays Muse.
Theatre & Opera
The updated version of 'The Misanthrope', starring Damian Lewis and Keira Knightley. I was impressed with both of them.
Visual arts
I am on the board of a minuscule 19th-century museum in a Copenhagen suburb. We are renovating and considering getting rid of half a room full of hideous oil paintings, which over the years were given to the museum by people who didn't like them either. But the board is now beginning to feel sorry for the art. What if someone loved the unfortunate-looking uncle on that portrait?
'An Education' is out now on DVD and Blu-ray
