The biographical movie follows Chris Kyle, a member of the elite force with the US Navy, who is sent to Iraq on a mission to protect his brothers-in-arms.
He earns the nickname “legend” from his peers after saving countless lives, but his reputation also grows behind enemy lines, making him a prime target of insurgents.
Halfway around the world he faces a different kind of battle on the home front as he strives to be a good husband to his wife Tanya, played by Sienna Miller, and father to his family from afar.
“Just tell me, tell me why you do it? I want to understand…I’m here, your family is here, your children have no father. You don’t know when to quit, you sacrificed enough, you let somebody else go,” she tells him.
American Sniper has been nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Cooper also earned his third Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
The film, which is based on Kyle’s autobiography American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in the US Military History, broke Christmas day box office records in the US to gross $1 million in five days despite playing in just four cinemas.
