Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

How to get Eighties hair

Connoisseur Tim Hartley, international creative director for Vidal Sassoon salons, defines the hottest Eighties hair-dos.

"Everyone wanted Bananarama hair. The look was spiky and quite aggressive using soap to get different textures, and lots of hair spray. The trends came from a mixture of glam rock, new romantic and gothic. At the beginning of the Eighties, hair was spiky on top and long down the back. Later on it was highly androgynous."

Who were the Eighties icons on the coif front?

"Annie Lennox with her androgynous crop as well as Phil Oakey, the front man of the Human League. Mark Almond was also fab with his very Mondrian, black tinted, slightly gothic look."

Best drinks of the Eighties

Connoisseur Jason Tank, head barman at Mezzo, Soho, London, reveals his hot alcoholic tips.

"The drinks of the Eighties were mainly cocktails. People had loads of money due to the economic boom, so they bought champagne cocktails. A Bellini - peach nectar and champagne - was one of the most popular cocktails of the Eighties: pure decadence."

Try out Jason's top five Eighties cocktails:

1 Pina Colada

Rum, pineapple juice, Cointreau, lemon juice over ice

2 Tequila Sunrise

Tequila Gold, orange juice, Grenadine, serve over ice, straight up.

3 Gatsby

Southern Comfort, lime, ginger ale, serve over ice, straight up

4 Long Island Iced Tea

Smirnoff vodka, Gordon's gin, Bacardi, tequila, Cointreau, lime juice

5 Harvey Wallbanger

Smirnoff vodka, Galliano, orange juice, over ice with fresh fruit
