Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Details 448 came from The Roll Call - Calling the Roll after an Engagement in the Crimea (1874), by Elizabeth Thompson, Lady Butler. It was one of those Victorian blockbuster paintings which toured and drew enormous crowds everywhere - "The Roll Call is Coming" said the sandwich-boards in Newcastle - something one can't imagine happening to an artwork nowadays; not least because, for us, a painting, unlike a concert, is an individual rather than a crowd experience. One shouldn't see The Roll Call, painted 20 years after the Crimean War, as "anti-war". It has a perfectly unsubversive Remembrance Sunday pathos. It's in the Royal Collection.

The first three correct entries came from: B Whelan, Stourbridge; A Seaton, Edinburgh; and C Fox, London NW6

In which picture by which painter can you find this wetter?

Answers on a postcard, to arrive by Friday 17 September: DETAILS 450, IoS, 1 Canada Square, London E14 5DL. Three winners will each receive a bottle of champagne
