Day Out

This year, life has been so hectic that most of my going out has been spent travelling to and from work. On the way I often try and stick in a visit to The Vintage House (071-437 2592), Old Compton St, where I go to lust at the superb selection of malt whiskies. I love wandering around Soho and Covent Garden or just hopping on buses in the hope of striking up interesting conversation. Living in Holloway, I find Camden Town a bit of a treat and there's a few really good restaurants dotted around, like The Camden Brasserie (071-482 2114) and The Underground Cafe (071-482 0010). In the evening, I rarely have the time to do anything, but I'm trying to get into the habit of going to Saturday theatre matinees. I recently saw Medea at The Almeida (071-359 4404) which I really enjoyed.

If I didn't have such an unsociable schedule, I would get up early for a start and go for a long, healthy walk around Regent's Park, before going for brunch at The Quality Chop House (071-837 5093) on Farringdon Road, which is kind of an upmarket plain food place. You sit on wooden benches in little booths and the food is superb. After a long lunch, I'd like to go and watch West Ham thrash Arsenal at Upton Park. In the evening I might go to The Comedy Store (0426 914433) in Leicester Square or Jongleurs (071- 924 2766) in Camden to catch up with my stand- up mates and do a bit of dissolute drinking. There used to be a time when I'd finish a job at lunchtime, go to the pub, and then on to some shady afternoon drinking club, but it's been years since I've had the time to do that. My evenings out nowadays usually consist of a trip two doors down the road to my local boozer, where I can get a decent pint of Guinness.
