Day Out
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Being asked to appear at Chichester Festival Theatre for the season combines all of my favourite things - working in a beautifully run theatre, while enjoying the peace and quiet of the Sussex countryside. My day begins with a lie-in after an exhausting performance the night before. I might walk along the beach at West Wittering or drive to Petworth House in Petworth to admire the Turners and Gainsboroughs and to walk through the deer park designed by Capability Brown.
Lunch would be either in a local pub - The Anchor Bleu in Bosham (0243 573956) is one of my favourites, or at Platters in Southgate, Chichester (0243 530430) where the food is delicious and light. Nick, who runs it, has the most amazing moustache. I love to wander around Chichester as it's a bit like a second home now after three seasons at the Festival Theatre. The Cathedral, dating back to 1091, is an eclectic mix of old and new art. Pallant House, built in 1712, contains a fabulous collection of fine antiques, art and porcelain. Tea in the country is a rare treat and nowhere better than Martin's Tearooms (0243 786715) for a truly naughty tea and a great selection of vegetarian food. After a quick stroll through Priory Park to watch the cricket it's time for my show. If it's a good one I like to celebrate with friends afterwards. Either a quick drink in our local pub The Bell or a more formal meal at the White Horse in Chilgrove (0243 59219) which has the largest wine list in the country. The seafood is fresh and beautifully presented and for the connoisseur there is always the Chateau Lafite for pounds 200]
