Your support makes all the difference.My day is pretty much organised around Tasha, my springer spaniel. She'a bit like Miss Havisham, she sits upstairs on her bed and her woof gets more peremptory as time goes by until you have to go and see what she wants. Although she's an old lady now she does like a swim, so at some point during the day I'll take her to the pond on Hampstead Heath. In the morning I'd probably get the papers and plough through them with a cup of tea, then go out for a bite to eat.
I have two watering-holes, where the hosts always make me feel like a princess. Cafe Laville, Edgware Rd, London W2 (071-706 2620) sits right on the bridge overlooking the canal in Maida Vale. Cibo (071-371 2085), my favourite Italian restaurant is in Russell Gardens, W14. It's a modern place with new art on the wall and is very warm and friendly. I might go to the National Portrait Gallery (071-306 0055) because a friend of mine, Peter Edwards has won first prize in the BP Portrait Award 1994. I love markets, Camden is a bit too crowded and Tash won't join in with that. Portobello is good fun. For an evening meal, I'd go to an Italian bistro La Capanina (071- 437 2473), Romilly Street, W1.
I'm really happiest in the countryside. An alternative would be to go down to the seaside, to a place where I used to take my mother near Climping, in West Sussex. It's the Bailiff's Court Hotel (0903 723511), and it's right next to the seaside. We'd have lunch, open up her wheelchair, go down a little path and spend the afternoon by the sea, pottering about. Tash, of course, would love that.
