The comedian’s jokes at the annual awards show were typically outrageous and covered subjects including Caitlyn Jenner, Jennifer Lawrence, Ben Affleck, and child abuse; sticking to his promise of not holding back.
He also made a parting remark to Mel Gibson that referred to a joke from five years ago, which was bleeped out for the television audience.
Writing on Twitter he said: "Hosting The Globes has made me want to do a new stand up show next year. Now THAT’S when you’re allowed to be offended. You whiney c***s.”
Gervais hasn’t toured a stand-up routine for some time. A show entitled Humanity was announced in 2012 but put on hold until he could be sure he had time to "do the show properly".
In September 2015 he revealed he had "locked picture" for his upcoming film Special Correspondents after wrapping the movie in July.
"It's turned out great I think," he wrote. "Even though it would certainly be billed as a comedy, it’s not a big broad loud obvious one… it’s a bit satirical. A bit dramatic. A bit romantic."
