From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The best joke at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival has been selected – and it joins a long list of previous winners.

Dave has been awarding the Funniest Joke trophy since 2009 and this year’s winner is Swedish comedian Olaf Falafel who returned to the circuit for the seventh time.

Each year, 2,000 people vote in the poll after a select number of jokes are shortlisted by a panel of experts. The award lists jokes anonymously to avoid bias towards well-known comedians

Speaking about winning the prize with his one-liner – which you can read in the gallery below – Falafel said: “It’s been really good fun. I would definitely say that winning this award has been a highlight, and just being able to make people laugh with my stupid jokes.”

Previous winners include Tim Vine, Stewart Francis and Ken Cheng.

You can scroll through the below gallery to see every winner to date so far.
