Recommendations this week are carnival-related, with Afrocentric beatz - Bulldozer and V Recordings have come up trumps. Planet V offers a impressive list of DJs spinning the choicest cuts in drum'n'bass, hip hop and any other grimey beatz they can lay their hands on. Roni Size - I'm still smarting from missing his legendary set at Creamfields - headlines the gig, with Krust in close attendance. Jumping Jack Frost, Bryan Gee, Peshay and the rest of the B2B collective display the slick end of drum'n'bass, with support from MC Dynamite and Moose.
The venue is Bagley's (admittedly, not too close to Notting Hill), which is humungous. Just when you think you know where you are, you find a new level and another arena.
All four arenas have an excellent line-up. Arena 2 showcases the phat beats, with the excellent Blak Twang performing live, with various rap and R'n'B spinners in support. Norman Jay, Matt Cantor (Freestylers), Dave VJ, Giles Peterson and DJs from Fresh'N'Funky and Boogie Bunch all feature, so it's worth throrough exploration.
Strictly for the jump-up urban posse.

WESTWOOD @ the temple
London's premier weekly hip hop venue has showcased some of the best talent from the US since its recent opening. This is the real thing, so don't expect too many cuts from Puff Daddy. The best in West Coast flavas mixed with grimey East Coast beatz - rap doesn't get any better. Break out your phat kicks and baggy garbs; Tim Westwood features on the decks with support from residents. Radio 1 off-on, off-on carnival stage appears to be back on, so you can bet whoever has crossed the Atlantic to perform will be at this gig tonight or Monday.

FRESH'N'FUNKY @ hanover grand
If you like your beatz phat and your bass deep then head to Hanover Street this Wednesday for the best midweek event of its kind. They serve up a heady brew of R'n'B and hip hop with a dash of drum'n'bass. This gig is very popular with the black community, who make up around 70 per cent of the punters - always a good indication that the tunes are great. No dress code and no attitude, a steal at the price, and a great night out. Arrive early - the queue can stretch down to Regent Street - or have your best guest-list blag lines at the ready.
