Hornimania '99

Horniman Museum & Gardens, 100 London Road, Forest Hill, London SE23 (0181-699 1872) tomorrow, 12noon-7pm, free

This museum's fifth Festival of World Music & Dance kicks off with an afternoon of bhangra, reggae and East European sounds performed in the ornamental gardens. There'll also be craft stalls and activities, plus workshops and performances throughout the week, culminating in a similar event next Sunday.

London Kite Festival

Hackney Marshes, Homerton Rd, London E8 (0181-449 8609) today 10am-11.30pm, tomorrow 11am-6pm, free

This annual event (above) will today mainly feature national competitions; tomorrow is more of a "come along and fly your kite" day. There will be bouncy castles and rides, as well as numerous stalls.

Splatt! Islington Festival

Highbury Fields, London N5 (0171-689 0200) today, 11am, free

It's "Final Festival Saturday" and kids get their own slice of the action. Billed as a "field full of plays and play", Splatt! will feature everything from a flea circus and face-painting to surreal story-telling.

Drive 99 & Motor Show

Science Museum, Wroughton, nr Swindon, Wilts (01793 466399) today and tomorrow, 10am-5pm, adults pounds 3, children free

Kids are endlessly fascinated by JCBs and here their dreams can come true when they get the chance to drive one, or a fire-engine, or a bus at the Science Museum's massive storage site (above). Other attractions include Team Extreme showing off their skills on bikes, skateboards and skates.

National Trust Music Day

Brownsea Island, Poole Harbour, Dorset (01202 707744) tomorrow, 11am- 3pm, adults pounds 2.50, children pounds 1.30 (free if they bring a musical instrument)

Local schools will be performing for visitors, who will also be able to take part in music workshops and try out instruments. The island, can be reached by public ferry from Poole Quay, Swanage, Bournemouth and Sandbanks.

Redcoats and Rebels

Bolsover Castle, nr Chesterfield, Derbyshire (01246 823349) today and tomorrow, 12noon, adults pounds 3, children pounds 2

History comes to life at this dramatic hilltop castle this weekend, when fierce plaid-wearing Jacobite warriors, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, will be fighting it out with the soldiers of King George II. Prior to the battle, visitors can learn more about the customs and lifestyles of the opposing forces. NS
