Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The ladies were on top in a "Veterans vs Women" match played in Prague earlier this month, but only by the narrowest of margins. Trailing at one stage by an undignified margin, the men, led by former world champions Spassky and Smyslov, fought back well over the last three rounds, finally losing by 251/2-241/2.
In the following game, the veteran Hungarian grand- master Lajos Portisch turned the tables beautifully on the women's world champion.
In the diagram position, after 21.Bd3, White appears to be building up a dangerous attack. The threat is 22.Rh5 g6 23.Rxh7! and pushing any K- side pawn creates dangerous weaknesses.
Portisch solved the problem brilliantly with 21...f6! 22.Bf4 Rxd3!! Now 23.Qxd3 loses to 23...Qf2! while 23.cxd3, as played in the game, set Black off on a very effective rook hunt. here are the full moves:
White: Xie Jun
Black: Lajos Portisch
