The centrepiece of the follow up to his prize-winning previous works, Crime and Punishment in Ukraine and Bastard Eden, Our Chernobyl, they were taken in the interrogation rooms of an unnamed Ukranian police station.

The police are not pictured – save for when a fist or gun hand strays into the corner of a shot – but the cruelty of the process and the brutality of their methods is plain to see, etched on to the faces of suspects such as the alleged prostitute and drug dealer shown above. It is a bleak, uncompromising account of state violence and degradation.
