Terry Pratchett's fantasy land is situated on an island in the Great Southern Pelagic Ocean, where young Mau and Daphne are stranded following a Tsunami.

It may not be Pratchett's more recognisable 'discworld' – a parallel universe he has conjured up for more than 30 novels – but it is one which follows in the vein of classic 'desert island' and 'endeavour' stories, ranging from Robinson Crusoe to Homer's Odyssey.

Ostensibly a children's tale - soon to be dramatised by the National Theatre – Nation tackles profound philosophical themes, with references to Genesis and Darwinism.
