From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson now feature on the sleeve in their roles as BDSM-loving billionaire Christian Grey and infatuated student Anastasia Steele.
The couple are seen moments before they kiss against a wall, with Mr Grey holding Anastasia’s arms above her head. The line “Now a major motion picture” has been added under the title.
Sam Taylor-Johnson’s film adaptation, also starring Rita Ora, Luke Grimes, Marcia Gay Harden and Max Martini, reaches UK cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2015.
A new trailer premiered last week, offering viewers a sneak peek into Christian and Anastasia’s “unique” relationship.
They are seen falling in love, dancing together and shooting ‘come to bed eyes’ at each other over drinks before we get a little glimpse inside the Red Room of Pain at some blindfolds and duct tape.
“You should steer clear of me, I’m not the man for you,” says Grey, gruffly.
Dornan recently revealed that there will be no “gratuitous sex scenes” in the film. In his own words, “there were contracts in place that said that viewers wouldn’t be seeing my, um, todger”. Sorry ladies.
Conservative groups in the US have issued statements calling on people to take action against the movie, which they accuse of “normalising domestic violence”.
“I think it’s very hard to argue that when it’s all consensual,” Dornan told The Observer. “There’s no rape, no forced sexual situations.”
EL James’ erotic novel series passed the 100 million sales mark earlier this year to become one of the most-read books in the world. Readers will see the steamy tie-in edition in stores from 6 January to further hype excitement for the movie.
