From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is Amazon's best-selling Kindle e-book for the week ending March 20, according to a list released March 23 by Publishers Marketplace. Nicholas Sparks's love story The Last Song and Kathryn Stockett's American civil rights-era novel The Help are in second and third place.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Swedish author Larsson's first title in his posthumously published Millennium trilogy, has been hovering on best-seller lists worldwide since it was published more than a year ago. It is back in the top spot following the US and UK release of the book's Swedish film adaptation. Nicholas Sparks's The Last Song is also benefitting from buzz surrounding its film adaptation; that movie, starring Miley Cyrus, is due out next week in the US and Australia.

Michael Palmer's medical thriller The Last Surgeon was released as an e-book and in hardcover on February 16. All 15 novels by the prolific writer have made best-seller lists; this newest title tells the story of Nick Garrity, an American trauma surgeon who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after having worked in a field hospital in Afghanistan following 9/11.

Clive Cussler's The Silent Sea is also new to the best-seller list this week. Released March 9, the book is the seventh in Cussler's adventure thriller series The Oregon Files, about the ship Oregon and its tech-savvy crew. Cussler, also a marine archeologist, writes concurrent series including NUMA Files, Isaac Bell, and Dirk Pitt, all adventure novels or techno-thrillers.
