Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Happy Christmas from The Independent on Sunday! As our gift to you, we have sorted out your Christmas shopping. On 14 and 21 December, the IoS books section will reveal its books of the year, just in time for you to give them as presents. Even better, a handful of lucky readers stand a chance to win a stocking-full of books, so if you win, all you will have to do is the wrapping. Whether you’re struggling to find something for the film buff who has everything, trying to please that cricket-mad auntie, or hoping to keep your kids entertained until at least Boxing Day, we have some ideas for you.

Next Sunday, we’ll be recommending the best books about food, cinema, politics and poetry, as well as biographies and memoirs and the second of three batches of paperbacks of the year. The following week, we’ll reveal the top fiction, best sport books and most beautiful photography books, and suggest stocking fillers for the bookishly inclined. This week’s teenage reading and paperback picks will be included in the giveaway, as well as next week’s books for 6 to 12-year-olds and the following week’s picture books for little ’uns.

Check these pages next Sunday to find out which Hollywood legend ordered joke-shop glasses for all the crew after a co-star’s eye fell out, and which political read is “the one book you need before the election”. And on Sunday 21 December, have a look at our sports books round-up to learn which subject of “the most revelatory football book of the year” was “revered as a cool, decisive leader of men on the pitch, yet … off it he swilled lager like there was no tomorrow”.

To stand a chance of winning, just email the page number on which a single gift-wrapped book appears in this section of today’s paper, along with your postal address, to iosbooks@independent.co.uk, stating in the heading of the email which category of books (Food, Cinema, Politics, Poetry, Biographies/Memoirs, Paperbacks, Photography, Fiction, Sport, Stocking Fillers, Teenagers, 6-12s, or Under 6s) you would like to win. Good luck – and please don’t forget to look up from your books when the turkey comes out.
