One Minute With: Mrs Stephen Fry, Diarist
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Where are you now and what can you see? I'm sipping a cup of Colombian full strength in the Cuppa Cabana, dear. I can see a bustling high street, a hissing cappuccino machine and a polar bear in a Laura Ashley frock. I'd better stick to half strength in future.
What are you currently reading? I'm very much enjoying 'The Brown Conundrum' by Dan somebody-or-other. It's a real page-turner about a handsome, broad-shouldered Professor of Religious Horticulture at Cambridge University and his battles with a fearsome sect called the Interflora.
Choose a favourite author and say why you like him/ her Dr Seuss. I love his social satire, his character development and his examination of universal truths. Not so keen on the rhymes, though. Or the pictures.
Describe the room where you usually write I generally write in our bedroom (nothing special - just the usual ceiling mirror and tiger-print duvet) while I'm waiting for Stephen to get back from the Red Lion. The amount he's had to drink is usually obvious by the length and quality of the entry.
What distracts you from writing? Stephen mostly, dear. And our six children. Or is it seven? Hmm . . . thirty days hath September...
Which fictional character most resembles you? Elizabeth Bennet from 'Pride and Prejudice'. In fact my first meeting with Stephen was almost identical to hers with Mr Darcy. Apart from the modern clothing, of course. And the kebab van. But Stephen's shirt was soaking. Although that wasn't rain.
What are your readers like when you meet them? Ghastly, dear. That's why I try to limit my personal appearances as much as possible, particularly with my own family.
Who is your hero/ heroine? I would have to say Julie Andrews. We have so much in common - I share her sunny disposition, her beautiful singing voice and only last week I made a complete set of curtains from my children's clothes.
