Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Where are you now and what can you see?
I'm in Berlin, at the Condé Nast International conference, and I'm looking out the window at the Holocaust memorial.
What are you currently reading?
The new James Salter, and the Burt Bacharach memoir. I tend to read two or three books at once, and have just finished Gone Girl and a book on Elvis Presley and punk rock.
Choose a favourite author and say why you admire her/him
Tom Wolfe, always, for reinventing journalism, and almost reinventing the novel. I collect editions of his books, and have got over 150 of them. The Bonfire Of The Vanities remains one of my favourite novels, although his early non-fiction is dizzying.
Describe the room where you usually write
In my study, surrounded by 30 years of books, magazines and newspapers. In front of me I have an original photograph taken for the cover of Bowie's Pin-Ups by Justin De Villeneuve.
Which fictional character most resembles you?
Pass.
Who is your hero/heroine from outside literature?
My friend Terry Jones, the creator of i-D and one of the most influential men of his time.
Dylan Jones's 'The Eighties: One Day, One Decade' is published by Preface Books
