Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. On February 6, as the first trailer for the film adventure Captain America: The First Avenger is shown on the Super Bowl telecast, a new eight-part digital comic book will be launched by Marvel.
The first issue of the series, titled Captain America: First Vengeance, will be available free online Sunday only at http://captainamerica.com, followed by the official release on February 8 through the Marvel Comics iPad app.
Each issue of the prequel will focus on the superhero Red Skull or other characters in the story, setting up the background for the summer film with the origin tale of Steve Rogers, who is given a dose of super-soldier serum as a volunteer for a top-secret research project.
It is the 70th anniversary of the Captain, according to the report in USA Today. "Characters don't stick around that long unless they remain relevant and vital to the modern era," said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans ( Fantastic Four) in the title role, Hugo Weaving ( The Lord of the Rings), Tommy Lee Jones ( Men in Black) and Stanley Tucci ( The Lovely Bones).
The film, directed by Joe Johnston ( The Wolfman), opens in North America July 22 and rolls out around the world through August.
