Your support makes all the difference.The Royal Ballet stiffens up its winter programme with a few 20th-century works next week: Balanchine's Apollo and Symphony in C and the late Sir Kenneth MacMillan's Judas Tree. Irek Mukhamedov will alternate every night between the roles of the rapist foreman in The Judas Tree and Apollo (his debut in the role). The other debutant as Apollo is Eddie J Shellman from the Dance Theatre of Harlem. The Judas Tree exemplified MacMillan's conviction that any subject, however sordid, could be portrayed in classical dance, and he proved his thesis with intricate and inventive choreography. David Bintley is no longer to be Resident Choreographer of the Royal Ballet. Bintley's works for the two royal companies have included Still Life at the Penguin Cafe, Galanteries, Hobson's Choice and The Snow Queen, as well as the less successful Planets and Cyrano. His latest work, Tombeaux, will premiere next month.
