Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

"Photography is all about humanity", he starts, "how we choose to live, how our environment affects us and how we affect our environment."

An award winning photographer in his own right, Matt Wain knows a bit about taking a decent shot.

Starting out with a rudimentary Olympus compact at the age of 10, Matt's passion for imagery and the imagination it can bring has taken him all over the world, but his appreciation of the basics is as strong as ever.

He continues, "for me a great shot is one that invites you to look into it, which challenges you and shows you something unexpected."

That's the crux of The Art of Building photography prize, of which this year Matt is a judge.

Now down to 12 finalists, the competition is a celebration of the unseen, the buildings we use and the shedding of new light on everyday structures.

Run by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and open to both professional and amateur photographers, the prize is a great platform for innovative digital photography.

With the winner announced on Monday, we thought we'd take a look at the final shortlist.
