Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Scream and Scream Again

If you hadn't already got the point, in the brave new world of British Art, the cinema and the visual arts are inextricably interlinked. The Hayward's recent "Spellbound" show made the connection with varying degrees of success, notably in the work of Douglas Gordon, who crops up again here. His fellow film-buffs now include Sadie Benning, Isaac Julien, Tony Oursler, Lisa Roberts and Marijke van Warmerdam.

MoMA, Oxford (01865 722733). To 22 Sept

Cross Currents

A crop of talented abstractionists from Tower Bridge's Reed's Wharf Gallery move temporarily to the Barbican. An apparently diverse field is united by a fascination with the natural environment and mankind's relationship with it. Familiar names will be those of Janet Nathan, Peter Randall-Page and John Copnall; but look out, too, for other talents, including Diane Howse, Jason Gathorne-Hardy and Victoria Arney.

Barbican Concourse, Sink St, EC2 (0171-638 4141). To 1 Sept

East

This annual art jamboree has been too long neglected and deserves our attention. The concept is an open, sending-in exhibition; the exacting judges are artists Richard Long and Roger Ackling and the standard of the 30-odd exhibitors is encouragingly high.

Norwich Gallery / Sainsbury Centre,UEA. (01603 610561 / 01803 456060.) To 7 Sept
