A museum in Paris has become the city’s first to welcome nudist visitors.

The Palais de Tokyo contemporary art museum, situated in the 16th district near the Trocadéro, granted naturists special one-off visiting hours for a tour of Discorde, Fille de la Nuit (Discord, Daughter of the Night) on Saturday night (5 May).

It’s reported that around 160 visitors attended the tour which sold out in less than two days.

The museum became Paris’s first gallery to open its doors to nudists, a step that campaigners are lauding as a breakthrough. It follows in the footsteps of Bois de Vincennes park which launched a dedicated naturist zone last year.

Julien Claude-Penegry, communications director of the Paris Naturists Association, said: “The naturists’ way of life is to be naked. Culture is part of our daily life, and this is a special opportunity.

“Today, the mentality is changing. Naturists ... are pushing past barriers, taboos or mentalities that were obstructive.”

There are said to be over 2.6 million nudists living in France, with 88,000 comprising the Parisian association.

A gallery in Vienna invited visitors to take their clothes off for a special viewing in 2013 of an exhibit dedicated to paintings of male nudity, while a museum in Australia has also opened its doors to naked viewers.
