SANTIAGO CALATRAVA, the Spanish engineer whose exhibition at the RIBA attracted a record 9,000 visitors in a month, has won a competition for the design of a modular London Underground station that can be built in a weekend.

A prototype will be built next spring and the design will gradually replace small, worn- out and inconvenient surface stations on the Underground network.
