Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Images of a "visual odyssey" by photographer Paul Hill across the Peak District between 1978 and 1990 are on show in London for the first time in 20 years.
Peak, Dark Peak, an exhibition of photographs curated by John Ferreira is at the Eleven gallery in London until 20 August.
The show is the result of his journeys across the Peaks over a period of 12 years which was turned into a book of the same name, now long since out of print.
In part inspired by Minor White, Hill’s landscapes are produced within a tight tonal range of grays, whilst the skyline, invariably, has been removed from the image.
The Ludlow-born photographer has lived in the Peak District for half of his life. It is the subtle tracks and scars left by people and animals over time on the landscape and the impact of the seasons that are the focus of his work.
Hill is considered to be one of the most influential British photographers of the last 30 years.
“Hill’s photographs position him among those land artists, from Capability Brown and Humphrey Repton to Richard Long, whose special relationship with the land lie at the heart of their aesthetic.” - Lewis Baltz.
