Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Progress isn't always good. In bygone days, the sharing of photographs was a communal experience - families would gather round a projector as it gave off the whiff of burning dust and shone images of family happiness onto a sheet at the far end of the room. Oh the fun that was had - mostly, it has to be said mercilessly mocking the sheer awkwardness and awfulness of the staged family shot that Dad had insisted on.

But as more and more of us return to the joys of socialising at home (90% of us, according to a survey from Sony Digital Imaging), so we can start to return to that communal joy. And, happily, Sony have just launched a new camera jam packed with unique functions meaning we’ll never have to sit through a bad photographic slideshow party again. The Cyber-shotTM WX1 from Sony will help anyone avoid disastrous family snaps in the future. Compact and beautifully styled the camera is the new flagship model of the feature-packed Cyber-shot™ W series bringing together Sony’s finest optical, imaging and processing technologies for near perfect shooting. New technologies allow for excellent low-light shooting capabilities as well as a unique panoramic shooting mode. Complementing the Exmor R™ CMOS sensor and BIONZ processor is a premium Sony-engineered G Lens that sets a new benchmark for compact cameras. This combines superbly with a 24mm wide angle lens allowing you to fit even more into your frame.

But to earn the right to avoid future embarrassment, you have to share the past horrors. Share your horror family snaps with us (and the world) and help us create the worst family slideshow ever. Email your worst and most embarrassing snaps and a short caption, and we'll give the winner the chance to escape the horror forever by winning a Cyber-shot WX1.

Email your entries, in jpg format, to websubmissions@independent.co.uk, with a short caption, and we'll feature the best on Independent.co.uk, with the very best winning the new Cyber-shot TM WX1 from Sony. Competition closes at midnight on Thursday 27 August, and terms and conditions apply.
