The Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais, 33, will be conducted by her husband Andris Nelsons (both left) of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. She will perform Desdemona's “Willow Song” and “Ave Maria” from Act 3 of Verdi's 1887 opera Otello and Tatyana's letter scene from Tchaikovsky's 1879 opera Eugene Onegin.
She made her Covent Garden debut in Madame Butterfly in 2011, conducted by Nelsons, who has just been appointed the conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The married couple's passion is Puccini. “It is easy when I'm singing with him. I don't even have to look at him because we feel each other,” says Opolais.
The soprano, who has now had 14 title roles at leading opera houses all over the world, was in fact fulfilling her mother's dream to become a famous opera star. “Maybe I will end up in the movies,” she says.
