Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Visual Arts: I went to Barry Flanagan's posthumous show at Waddington Galleries. I thought Barry was a very good artist although I prefer his work prior to the hares. I've also just been to the Henry Moore show at Tate Britain. I think Moore is a great artist but his work has never moved me in the same way as Giacometti or Brancusi. I saw the Turner and Richard Long show also at the Tate. The Turner was my favourite of the three. I thought the Long show was very interesting but not really my thing.

Theatre: I did go to see 'Red', the play about Rothko at the Donmar last year. I knew Rothko and had visited him in his studio on a number of occasions so it was interesting to see it. A little different from my recollection but very interesting nonetheless.

Films: 'Soy Cuba', a Soviet/Cuban film made in 1964 by Mikhail Kalatozov, which my son Alex lent to me. The cinematography is quite extraordinary. I also went to see 'Iron Man 2' at the IMAX with my grandchildren.

Television: I'm enjoying The World Cup at the moment. Even the slow-motion bits that everyone keeps saying are pointless but that I think are great. Nowadays, I watch mostly old films. I've been re-watching 'On the Waterfront' and 'A Streetcar Named Desire'.

Books: I just finished 'The Kite Runner' which I enjoyed. I am currently re-reading 'Eroticism' by Georges Bataille, which I came across on my bookshelf recently. It's a study of the underlying sexual basis of religion and philosophy, especially in its relationship to death. I always really liked a lot of the French writers like Camus and Sartre just as I like the art.

William Turnbull: Beyond Time is at Waddington Galleries until 3 July (Williamturnbullart.com)
