Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The small town of Arles in the South of France will welcome thousands of visitors as it transforms its local buildings into galleries and unveils the works of local and international photography greats for the 42nd edition of Les Rencontres d'Arles.

42nd Les Rencontres d'Arles: Uncertified
July 4-September 18
Arles, France
Map

Held in a small, picturesque town in the South of France, Les Rencontres d'Arles is far from the quaint country exhibition one might expect to see in such a location. The photography festival traverses 60 exhibitions, professional exchanges, and seminars and has become an institution for professional and amateur photographers alike. In 2010 the event attracted 73,000 visitors. Unlike other major photography events such as PHotoEspaña, Contact and Paris Photo, Les Rencontres d'Arles juxtaposes the works of famous photographers with those by unknown amateurs.

The broad-ranging art fair encompasses contemporary and modern art as well as more traditional Japanese art forms such as nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) and ukiyoe (Japanese woodblock art). It is the largest event of its kind in the country. Art Fair Tokyo drew a record crowd of 50,000 visitors in 2010. The Fair's motto is "art is something to buy, not just something to look at."
