Tomorrow the millions of men and women who gave their lives in the two world wars will be remembered in services across the country. It's appropriate then to recommend a trip to the Sandham Memorial Chapel, the site of Stanley Spencer's masterpiece and one of the greatest English artworks of the century. It is dedicated to the memory of one man, Henry Willoughby Sandham, but Spencer's message is universal: the paintings are not about the heroism or grandeur of war but focus instead on the ordinariness of army life. The chapel is peopled by shabby soldiers drinking tea and reading maps: their mood is quiet and casual. The effect is one of the most moving memorials in the country.
