Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

BRICKS AND MORTAR

The Department of the Environment works with builders whose new homes achieve Sap ratings of 80 or more. The list of housebuilders includes: Admiral Homes, Chestnut Homes, Dibben Homes, Mylcrist Builders, Potton and Linden Homes. Others using high Sap/NHER ratings include Beazer Homes, Hamilton Knight and Bellway Homes. A low-energy demonstration house is currently being built alongside the Create Environment Centre in Bristol (0117 925 0505). The Eco House has a Sap energy rating of 100. When it is open to the public in the summer, the geometric structure will house a caretaker-cum-tenant.

USEFUL UTILITIES

Wates claims to be the first UK housebuilder to provide a water-saving Pressure Butt. The system, featured at Wates' Rivermead development in East Molesey (prices: pounds 225,000 - pounds 305,000), recycles up to 35 per cent of the waste water and makes an estimated saving of 14 gallons a day. For further information on the Pressure Butt, telephone 01797 320140. Houses at Hassall Homes' Knightswood estate in Nottingham feature an intelligent TotalHome electronic system which controls heating, lighting and a security alarm.
