UFC 206: Lacking stellar names fighting but Conor McGregor will be watching the main event intently
UFC 206 may be lacking a legitimate title fight, but if you think it’s not going to be worth tuning into this Saturday night you better think again
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The main event features a blockbuster UFC interim featherweight title fight between two of the most exciting fighters in the world right now—Anthony Pettis versus Max Holloway.
Pettis is a former UFC lightweight world champion and after going on a troublesome three fight losing streak to Rafael dos Anjos, Eddie Alvarez and Edson Barbosa, the Milwaukee native bounced back earlier this year with a win in his debut fight at 145-pounds against the Brazilian, Charles Oliveiera.
The American this weekend will be focusing on proving to the world this weekend that he has what it takes to win gold at two different weight-classes though if he is to do that he will have to stop a man in form—Max Holloway.
Holloway is riding an incredible nine fight winning streak and is undefeated since his loss to Conor McGregor over two years ago. Since that loss in Boston, Holloway has been on a rampage claiming scalps like no other. Big, high profile wins over the likes of Ricardo Lamas and Cub Swanson have all been devastating and often highly exciting.
A win for either man on Saturday night will see them face former champion Jose Aldo in a unification title fight to determine the new king at 145-pounds. The only joker in the pack right now is the man who the UFC stripped of the title last week Conor McGregor.
The Irishman continues to carry around both title belts and stated at a fan event last weekend that he still considered himself the two-weight world champion. The next chapter in the saga for the UFC featherweight crown will continue on Saturday night and who knows, the man who currently calls himself the ‘Champ Champ’ could well be in attendance at the Rodgers Centre in Toronto, Canada this weekend.
So much more to look forward to
If that blockbuster main event wasn’t enough for you, then the rest of the undercard might convince you.
While we may be lacking some of the so called ‘big names’ in the UFC, the matchups set for the main card should be something special.
Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone taking on Matt Brown at welterweight should be the fight between two men who don’t know the meaning of backing down. Both loved to come forward and pressure on the front foot and while both are more than capable on the ground, they usually prefer keeping it standing. This alone is worth the money tuning in for and it goes down in the co-main event slot on Saturday.
If you still aren’t convinced perhaps Doo Ho Choi ‘The Korean Superboy’ might grease the wheels. If you are scratching your head wondering exactly who he is then you need to start keeping an eye out for this man.
The Korean may look like he’s 21 going on 12, but he’s a fighter with deadly knockout power and he’s undefeated in the UFC so far with two highly impressive knockout victories. Choi’s hands are deadly and he’s not a man to sleep on. As good as he is, it will be interesting to see how well he fairs against his first big time opposition when he fancies UFC veteran and #4 ranked Cub Swanson in the main card opener.
This one had all the makings for a barn burner and the young apprentice faces one of the most experienced fighters currently in the UFC.
UFC 206 may lack a Conor McGregor or a Ronda Rousey blockbuster name fighting, but it’s still not one any UFC fan can afford to miss. Make sure you tune in on Saturday night and don’t miss a beat from everything that goes down in Toronto, Canada.
