From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Martine Le Moignan, the former world champion who said she would never play for her country again, hinted at a change of heart after a surprise win carried her to the last 16 of the British Open at Lambs Club in London yesterday, writes Richard Eaton.
Le Moignan won 8-10, 9-3,
9-4, 1-9, 1-7 against Cassie Jackman, the fifth-seeded former world junior champion who was No 1 in the ill-starred England team which lost their world title 18 months ago.
That seemed to spell the end of Le Moignan's long international career, especially as her extraordinary defeat by Donna Newton led to a row between her and the England manager, Alex Cowie. But after her determined victory over Jackman, Le Moignan said: 'If I'm still playing better than the others and England needs me I might have to think again.'
Le Moignan looked to be fading when she lost the fourth game quickly and slipped to 1-5 in the fifth, but when it mattered most she was slightly steadier and perhaps stronger than Jackman.
