A confrontation between Wayne McCullough and Naseem Hamed moved closer on Saturday night following the Ulsterman's split decision over Jose Luis Bueno at The Point, Dublin.
McCullough, drained at the 8st 6lb limit, had to go off for treatment to his left eardrum, which was damaged in the second round. He is now on the verge of giving up his World Council title to campaign at super-bantamweight.
His manager, Matt Tinley, said the champion had struggled to make the weight and is considering whether to face Luigi Camputaro in Las Vegas on 7 June or turn to Hamed instead.
"If there's only doubt about him being strong at 118lbs, he's not going to fight at it; he'll give up his title and we'll go to 122lbs," said Tinley, who added that he had had talks with Hamed's manager, Brendan Ingle.
