Six Nations: Ireland in profile

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ireland take on Scotland at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon as the duo kick off their Six Nations campaign.

Gregor Townsend knows his Scottish side will have to pull out all the stops to defeat and Ireland outift who have won 15 of their past 16 Tests at home and are beginning a new era under head coach Andy Farrell.

Wales have set the early running with fast start against Italy in Cardiff at lunchtime and both of these sides will want to join them in beginning with a win. Follow it live after the conclusion of Wales vs Italy:

A few Scottish voices in the crowd aid the players in a rendition of "Flower of Scotland". Stuart Hogg allows himself a big grin as he sings the final note. He's ready to lead his country in the Six Nations for the first time.

Ireland sing their two anthems, with a traditionally rousing rendition of Ireland's call belted out. Caelan Doris looks very, very confident - he is a serious talent, and he should tear it up today. His battle with fellow international newbie Nick Haining is hugely intriguing - the hot prospect versus the unfancied journeyman at number eight. We'll see how they go.

Mathieu Raynal of France is our referee in Dublin this afternoon. Glenn Newman is ready to assist in the truck - the New Zealander is our TMO.

A peep of the whistle from Raynal - off we go...

Adam Hastings kicks the ball deep into the Ireland half and we have begun.

Strong start from Scotland, with Stuart Hogg, Huw Jones and Adam Hastings prominent as they shift the ball right and left. Nick Haining's first carry is a powerful one, knocking the tackler back as he lurks out on the right.

But there is a positive riposte from his opposite number - Caelan Doris gets himself in a strong position over the ball and wins a holding on penalty just as Scotland start to really threaten. Lively stuff.

Rob Herring hits his jumper and the first lineout is well executed, allowing Conor Murray to release a well-weighted box kick that Sean Maitland takes down we'll on halfway.

Scotland are playing really nicely in these opening moments. There is plenty of movement at the line and behind, with forwards brought onto the ball with momentum and winning the collisions, with Jonny Gray able to get the arms free and bring Zander Fagerson in to the game on a hard charge. Adam Hastings' back of the hand offload fails to find blue hands, but Stuart Hogg regathers the momentum by beating three men in succession with a left-foot step.

And they win the penalty! Ireland fiddle with the ball illegally at a breakdown in the 22, and Scotland will have a chance to take the lead.

But more of a worry for Ireland will be Caelan Doris. He's taken a nasty blow to the head from Adam Hastings as he tries to tackle the fly-half, and he is down for a good three minutes before he is able to rise to his feet. He'll walk off under his own power, and that might well be the last we see of him. If he was knocked out, he'll be done for the afternoon. An HIA at least.

Peter O'Mahony replaces him.

PENALTY! Ireland 0-3 Scotland

Meanwhile Adam Hastings has had plenty of time to steady himself and slot through a simple three points. Scotland into the lead, and good value for it.

Jordan Larmour is just so hard to put down, deceptively strong and with feet like a salsa dancer. Twice he makes a line break, first on the counter and then when put into space by a nice pass from Johnny Sexton.

He slips the offload away to Conor Murray, and Ireland venture into the Scottish 22 for the first time.
