England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

ENG 139-2, Burns 69, Root 54

Root is happy to play a more expansive drive when Cummins goes fuller, he beats the fielder and backward point and picks up another boundary.

Lots of cheering coming from the Old Trafford crowd, after two subdued days they are making use of England's good work.

ENG 143-2, Burns 69, Root 58

Oh dear, oh dear.

Cummins entices Root to try and work the ball to leg, he does and the ball comes flying off the edge. It shoots between the wicketkeeper and first slip but neither of them attempt to catch the ball.

Root picks up a fortunate four runs.

ENG 147-2, Burns 73, Root 58

There's nothing fortunate about that shot. Nathan Lyon straightens his line to Burns, who drops to one knee and sweeps him away for four.

Good batting.

Review time.

Cummins hits Root on the back leg and appeals for lbw. Kumar Dharmasena gives in not out but Paine sends it upstairs.

ENG 147-2, Burns 73, Root 58

Not out.

The ball hit Joe Root outside the line of off stump so Australia lose their review. A lot has been said about the quality of the umpiring in this series but in this test match Kumar Dhamasena and Marais Erasmus have both been excellent.

ENG 151-2, Burns 73, Root 62

Oh my.

Cummins finds the edge of Root's bat again but it's played with soft hands and goes past the slips for four more.

England bring up their 150.

ENG 151-2, Burns 73, Root 62

Cummins beats the edge again and Root calls for the physio. His leg is giving him some trouble from when Cummins pinned him for the lbw shout.

The medics will bring out the magic spray, give it a massage and make sure he can continue.

ENG 151-2, Burns 73, Root 62

Pat Cummins is in the middle of a testing spell. He's found the edge of Root's bat on a couple of occasions and has tried to work over Rory Burns.

Joe Root is still being treated.

ENG 151-2, Burns 73, Root 62

Joe Root is ready to go again and Cummins pins him on the gloves with his first ball back. Root is in the wars out there.
