Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The trail from The Dell to Ewood Park, which has already taken Tim Flowers and Alan Shearer to Lancashire, was yesterday followed by Jeff Kenna. Southampton have agreed to sell their 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international full-back to Blackburn Rovers for £1.5m.

Kenna withdrew from the Saints' squad to face West Ham in a Premiership fixture last night and flew north for talks. "Blackburn made an offer which we accepted," Southampton's director of football, Lawrie McMenemy, said. "We will be sorry to lose him because Alan Ball and I have watched him make very good progress."

Guy Whittingham could be on the move again - for the second time this season. The striker who joined Sheffield Wednesday from Aston Villa in December is a target for ambitious Birmingham City. "We have spoken to Wednesday and we want him on loan with a view to signing him in the summer," Barry Fry, the City manager, said. "That would suit us best."

The Scottish Football Association has banned the Celtic manager, Tommy Burns, from the touchline for the rest of the season and fined him £1,000, after an exchange of words with the referee, Bobby Orr, at a game against Partick in January. Dundee United, who parted company with their manager, Ivan Golac, on Tuesday, are expected to offer the position to their former player Billy Kirkwood, currently a coach at Rangers.
