January transfer window 2019: Premier League transfer round-up

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Premier League's January transfer window is upon us with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all set to be busy.

Liverpool were the summer's biggest spenders with no fewer than four new arrivals. Goalkeeper Alisson was the headline-grabber with the Brazilian already proving worth every penny of the world-record fee the Reds shelled out for the Brazilian. Could long-term target Nabil Fekir join him next month? United got a couple of new faces in through the door in the summer but it hasn't made a difference with Jose Mourinho out and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in. Will he spend them out of trouble in the January sales?

Chelsea have made the biggest splash with the signing of Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic while Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal could all choose to dip their toes in the water as they battle for an all-important top four spot. We will have all the latest news, views, rumours, gossip and done deals right here so don't touch that dial.

In Scotland, Hibernian defender Efe Ambrose has left the club after rejecting an improved three-year contract.

Ambrose made 86 appearances for the club, after originally joining on loan from Celtic in 2017.

The 28-year-old is rumoured to be interesting Cardiff City, with Neil Warnock in the market for defensive reinforcements.

Meanwhile, Cardiff striker Gary Madine is on the verge of joining Sheffield United on loan.

Madine, who played for United's rivals Sheffield Wednesday from 2011-2015, joined Cardiff 12 months ago for around £6m from Bolton, but is yet to score for the club in 19 appearances.

The 28-year-old is yet to play in the Premier League this season, and now looks to be heading back to Sheffield.

The future of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is currently up in the air.

The 21-year-old, who is on loan at Aston Villa, is in fine form for the Championship club having scored 16 goals so far this season.

However, Wolves are said to be interested in signing the 21-year-old on a permanent basis but the move is complicated slightly by the fact that Chelsea would need to recall Abraham by January 14, and under Fifa rules no player can play for more than two teams in one season.

Abraham appeared for Chelsea in the Community Shield, but it is thought that this will not stop any potential move as the season's curtain-raiser is not seen as an 'official game'.

Watford striker Stefano Okaka is on the verge of joining Udinese on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy.

The 29-year-old, who has four caps for Italy, has only played three times this season and is not in Javi Garcia's plans at Vicarage Road.

Ipswich Town, who are languishing at the bottom of the Championship, have signed striker Will Keane on loan from Hull City until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old is yet to score this season in six Championship appearances, and he is Paul Lambert's third signing of the January transfer window after deals for defenders Callum Elder and Janoi Donacien.

Blackburn Rovers have announced new deals for strikers Danny Graham and Ben Brereton.

Graham has signed a one-year extension keeping him at the club until June 2020 while 19-year-old Brereton has signed a permanent deal from Nottingham Forest until June 2022.

Bournemouth have signed Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne on loan until the end of the season, according to Sky Sports

The 27-year-old has made three Premier League appearances for the Reds this season, but is behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez in the pecking order at right-back.

Cardiff City have also been strongly linked with the former Crystal Palace and Southampton man.

Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola believes Callum Hudson-Odoi does have a future at the club.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's FA Cup third round tie against Nottingham Forest tomorrow, Zola was asked about the winger amid serious interest from Bayern Munich.

"I know Bayern are interested in him, but we are as well. We have had a contract with him for a while and we will see what the player wants.

"He has not played what he wants. I have told him it s not a waste of time, because you are pushed to do more and I hope he uses this time in a wise way.

"I believe we can help him, develop him and I believe he has a future in this club."

Hudson-Odoi has broken into the first-team squad this season and has made six Premier League appearances.

A £30m plus add-ons offer has been made by Bayern according to Sky Sports, with Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Leipzig also keeping tabs on the 18-year-old.

Reports coming out of Italy suggest that Inter Milan centre-back Miranda is keen to leave the club.

The Brazil international is interesting clubs in Europe and China, and the 34-year-old is said to be keen on a move in order to play more - he has made only seven Serie A appearances this season.

West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has said Andy Carroll will not be sold this month.

Carroll started his first match in a year during Wednesday's 2-2 draw against Brighton, and is likely to be involved in the Hammers' FA Cup game against Birmingham City tomorrow despite a cut above his eye.

Pellegrini said: "I think Andy will stay here with us this month. He is an important player for this and if he keeps taking advantage of his minutes, he will be a crucial player for this team."
