From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Spurs are in need of a win to strengthen their position in the top four – London rivals Chelsea are now only two points behind in fifth. A win will however restore the gap to five points with Liverpool just a point ahead in third.
Watford are more or less safe from relegation but have a place in the top half of the table in their sights: a win here will lift them above Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, level on points with tenth-place Newcastle United.

4 mins: Now it's the turn of Harry Kane to go for his goal. Mousa Dembele, Ben Davies and Son Heung-Min work the ball wonderfully well down the left, and when it's worked into the box for the Tottenham striker, the home fans are on their feet. They needn't have got too excited though as Kane finds himself off balance on the turn and his shot is easily gathered by Orestis Karnezis.
8 mins: Tottenham have begun to take control of possession, and have forced two corners in these early stages. Indeed, both corners have eventually been met by the head of a home player but Kane and then Eric Dier were off target with their efforts. Watford have lost nine and drawn one of their last ten away games in the Premier League - scoring two goals in the process - and will need to regain a foothold here if they are to stop that form continuing in the same vein.
11 mins: The hosts are totally dominant with the ball with those in yellow shirts happy to sit off their opponents and protect their goal. The one exception is Will Hughes, who is darting around midfield like a man possessed under the watchful eye of the national coach, Gareth Southgate.
14 mins: Watford spring a sharp counter attack and should ask a better question of Spurs. Jose Holebas moved Hughes down the left, and the midfielder's clever reverse-pass into the box has Richarlison in space.
16 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM 1 WATFORD 0:
Orestis Karnezis has been Javi Gracia's first choice goalkeeper since the new head coach came to the club, but the Greek stopper hasn't repaid his manager's faith here. Kieran Trippier's cross from the right should have been an easy take for the Watford custodian but, after Christian Kabasele, ducked in front of him, Karnezis spilled possession. Quick as a flash, Christian Eriksen whipped the ball away from the recovering keeper and then teed up Dele Alli, who took one touch to control before side-footing into an inviting net.
18 mins: Is this game as good as over? Remember Watford have only netted two goals on the road since November: Andre Gray's consolation at Manchester City at the start of January and an early opener from Daryl Janmaat at Crystal Palace in December.
26 mins: Big chance for Watford! A slack pass from Dier in this own defensive third gifts possession to Etienne Capoue in midfield. The former Tottenham man responds with a smart early pass straight into the path of Andre Gray inside the penalty area, but the striker's first-time shot is blocked by the alert reactions of Hugo Lloris.
27 mins: Kieran Trippier is showing the effects of an earlier knock he took from a late Watford tackle. The right-back scored his only Premier League goal against tonight's opponents but he may not last much longer in this match. The Tottenham medical team are keeping a close eye on the defender.
30 mins: There are penalty shouts from the home fans as Son remains sat on the turf inside the Watford penalty area, a look of confusion on his face. The South Korean can't believe that referee Michael Oliver hasn't awarded him a spotkick after he was pushed over by Kabasele. I'm sure Gianluigi Buffon would have much to say on the matter.
36 mins: Another chance for Watford goes begging, and again it's the inventiveness of Hughes that is key to creating it. After Trippier is dispossessed by Richarlison, Hughes flicks a clever pass past Davinson Sanchez for Abdoulaye Doucoure inside the area. Rather than going straight for goal, the Frenchman opts for coming back inside on his right foot, allowing defenders to get back in position and eventually takes the shot off the foot of Hughes with an effort straight at Lloris.
