Bastian Schweinsteiger has hailed Manchester United’s appointment of Jose Mourinho, describing his new manager as ‘the best’ in world football.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who arrived at Old Trafford last summer from Bayern Munich, endured a difficult first season with the club, spending much of it sidelined through injury.

The Germany international, who was included in Joachim Löw’s squad for this summer’s European Championships in France, has been linked with a move away from United since Mourinho’s appointment last week.

Schweinsteiger, however, is looking forward to getting started under his new club boss and told reporters: “I think we did a great job getting Jose Mourinho to Manchester, one of the best coaches – if not the best – in European football.

“But we will get to the topic of Manchester United later," he added. "We are all happy that we got a coach like that, but right now the players are thinking more about the Euros not about United.”

Schweinsteiger was brought to the club by Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal and, as The Independent revealed last month, the Dutchman’s ‘special treatment’ of his signing rankled other squad members.

After suffering a knee injury against Sheffield United during an FA Cup tie in January, Schweinsteiger made just four appearances for United and was regularly absent from training between matches.

In total, Schweinsteiger made 31 appearances for his new club during the 2015/16 season, scoring one goal.
