Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Two old Bundesliga rivals, Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, renew acquaintances at Anfield on New Year's Eve when Liverpool take on Manchester City.

The manager meet each other for the first time in English football, having met on eight separate occasions while in charge of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively.

They each have four wins and four defeats from their encounters with each other, but who will emerge victorious on Merseyside and strike a potentially serious blow in this season's title race?

It’s a big game for…

Raheem Sterling. Since moving from Liverpool to Manchester City, the 22-year-old has played his former employers twice, a 3-0 thrashing upon his return to Anfield and a 4-1 drubbing at the Etihad. The winger will be desperate to silence the Liverpool fans.

Best stat…

15: Liverpool have gone 15 games unbeaten at Anfield against City, with the Citizens’ last win coming back in the 2002/03 season when Nicolas Anelka scored a last minute winner.

Remember when...

Phillipe Coutinho put Liverpool back in front against City in the 2013/14 season when they were mightily close to winning the league.

Player to watch…

Adam Lallana. The attacking midfielder has been in dazzling form for the Reds. It seems as if anything that Liverpool will create will come through Lallana, especially with the absence of Coutinho. The 28-year-old has scored three goals and set up one in his last three games.

Past three meetings…

Liverpool 3 (Lallana, Milner, Firmino) Manchester City 0, Premier League, March 2016

Liverpool 1 (Coutinho) Manchester City 1 (Fernandinho) (Man City win on penalties), EFL Cup, December 2016

Manchester City 1 (Aguero) Liverpool 4 (Mangala O.G, Coutinho, Firmino, Skrtel), Premier League, November 2015

Paul Pogba on United's late win

"It's beautiful - it's why we love football. The win as very important.

"We had a lot of chances and we could have won the game easier, but we are very happy with the three points."

Albrighton - we need to build on this

Marc Albrighton says Leicester must use their narrow win over West Ham as a springboard for the new year.

"It's always nice to end the year on a high note and I think that game sums up our year," he said.

"Grit, determination, everything – we showed it in abundance today and we need to build on this result in the new year.

"It's no secret that we’re not in a place that we want to be at the moment, but the performance today was tremendous."

Cahill - We will not be beaten

Gary Cahill says Chelsea have forgotten how to lose, after the Blues held off a gallant Stoke to make it 13 wins in a row.

"We had to dig deep and work hard at times," Cahill said. "We were disappointed over their first goal, I thought it was offside.

"Nevertheless, we showed good character. We never felt like we were beaten, but it was a tough game, as we expected.

"We have to keep grounded and focused on what we are doing. This was difficult. We have a feeling at the minute that we don't think we will get beaten, but that is because we're working hard."

O'Shea - Sunderland nowhere near good enough

Sunderland captain John O'Shea on the 4-1 defeat at Burnley: "Unacceptable today, not good enough. Away from home you have to be resilient together, but the goals we conceded were not acceptable and the players have to take responsibility.

"Nowhere near good enough, and we will have to rectify this quickly. There is no excuse for what went on, and it's something we will have to look at collectively and individually and dust ourselves down very quickly.

"The dressing room is not a good place at the minute but we know we can quickly turn this around. We have to have the attitude that we fight together.

"We want to give ourselves a chance and make teams earn their goals, not gift them like we did today. Burnley took their chances well but we helped them a lot along the way."
