From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

After last weekend’s collapse on the south coast and with Mamadou Sakho indefinitely exiled, you would assume a new central defender would be wanted at Liverpool.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Jürgen Klopp wishes to concentrate on strengthening other areas on his playing squad.

There will, in that case, be no deal for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, who is rumoured to have a £25m release clause in his contract.

Maybe a left-back will be considered then, despite James Milner’s manful efforts in the role so far this term?

Schalke’s Sead Kolasinac is a target, according to Sport Bild, but Manchester City could provide competition for the 23-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, in outgoing news on the coaching staff, the Under-23s head coach Michael Beale has taken charge of his last reserve fixture before heading to South America.

The coach’s departure for Sao Paolo creates a vacancy in Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff and, as The Independent reported last week, Steven Gerrard is expected to fill it.
