Guardiola explains reasons behind new two-year contract

Manchester City hosted Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League after Pep Guardiola renewed his contract at the Etihad - but it failed to change the momentum of his team, as Spurs ran out incredible 4-0 winners to inflict a fifth straight defeat on City.

Erling Haaland missed two early chances but Spurs scored with their first attack, James Maddison netting from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross. Maddison immediately netted his second, clipping in after a Son Heung Min pass, and while City would have hoped for a fast start after half time it was Pedro Porro who instead next scored, rifling in within minutes of the restart.

City continued to push and Vicario had to make a few saves, but it was without real threat or belief and Timo Werner teed up Brennan Johnson for a late fourth on the counter. Follow live reaction from Manchester City vs Tottenham in our live blog, below.

Vicario continues amid boos from the home crowd. He was caught higher than that by Savinho so perhaps the landing jarred his foot somewhat.

Silva gives the ball away twice in a few seconds, Kulusevski does well once more and Sarr bends a shot well over the crossbar.

Son then has a shooting chance after being played in by the Swede, who has been excellent so far this evening, but he cuts inside instead and is blocked out by three defenders.

Vicario goes down again and needs attention.

Richard Jolly at the Emirates: “A very happy birthday so far for James Maddison, even if City's celebrations of Pep Guardiola's new contract and Rodri's Ballon d'Or are falling a bit flat. Guardiola's latest attempt to compensate for Rodri's absence has been to play a 4-4-1-1 formation. Phil Foden is finding space as a No 10. The problem for City is that they, without Rodri, they have not tracked Maddison when he has scored. It also feels a bit odd to see Rico Lewis, who could have been used in the middle of that midfield, instead out on the right.”

Almost a chance, almost a mistake. A lofted pass sees Porro head back toward Vicario but short - the goalkeeper has to rush out to get there before Savinho, who catches him with a lofted boot, but just a foul no card.

Guardiola in conversation on the bench with his coaches - that new two-year deal hasn’t made any immediate change to City’s fortunes.

City are having plenty of joy in buildup play down the left and Gvardiol again delivers a nice ball into the box - Savinho’s diving header is tipped away by Vicario and he’s offside anyway.

Udogie now gives away a bit of a needless free-kick on the right and Foden has the chance to deliver...all the way across and out for a goal kick.

City try to press Spurs high up but Davies and Maddison just about do enough to play past it. Kulusevski then leads the counter and pulls it across towards Son six yards out - but he’s on his heels and Walker just about gets there first to clear.

Son then plays a reverse pass to feed in Solanke who rifles a shot in on goal - tipped over by Ederson.

Another chance at one end for Haaland, another moment of danger caused by Son at the other. Neither lead to the goalkeepers needing to intervene, but City look so wary now every time Spurs look to counter-attack.

We haven’t really seen Foden on the ball too much, nor out on the right actually - he’s very narrow and almost behind Haaland, leaving Walker the whole flank to run at. He hasn’t got forward much yet though and is struggling against Son the other way.

GOAL! 19’ - Man City 0-2 Spurs

Incredible scenes! Dreadful passing out as Gvardiol gives it away to Maddison, he plays a one-two with Son on the edge of the area, draws Ederson and just...a gorgeous, gorgeous clip over the Brazilian goalkeeper and into the net!

Spurs are two goals up after 20 minutes!

Goodness me - Son Heung Min almost makes it 2-0 with an outrageous bending effort, but Ederson is able to lunge and stretch and do really well to parry it around the post and wide. Spurs ahead out of nothing, but suddenly looking very confident and happy to get further upfield.

Pep Guardiola stalks the touchline, spits and watches on as his team gift Spurs another chance...

Richard Jolly at the Etihad:

“Early reward for a couple of Ange Postecoglou's decisions: bringing back James Maddison, who has scored, but also the resulting shift of Dejan Kulusevski, Spurs' best player this season when in midfield, to the right wing. But Kulusevski invariably plays well at the Etihad. He has scored here on each of Tottenham's three previous trips. Now he has an assist already. Josko Gvardiol probably could have done better for the goal, though, backing off to give Kulusevski too much room.”

GOAL! 13’ - Man City 0-1 Spurs

Talk of the devil...!! A brilliant run down the right from Kulusevski who beats Gvardiol to a loose ball, holds him off and bends a fantastic, curling cross over Stones and right onto James Maddison’s left boot - and full on the stride the attacking midfielder buries it past Ederson and in for a 1-0 lead for Spurs, with just about their first move into the box!
