Guardiola explains reasons behind new two-year contract

Manchester City hosted Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League after Pep Guardiola renewed his contract at the Etihad - but it failed to change the momentum of his team, as Spurs ran out incredible 4-0 winners to inflict a fifth straight defeat on City.

Erling Haaland missed two early chances but Spurs scored with their first attack, James Maddison netting from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross. Maddison immediately netted his second, clipping in after a Son Heung Min pass, and while City would have hoped for a fast start after half time it was Pedro Porro who instead next scored, rifling in within minutes of the restart.

City continued to push and Vicario had to make a few saves, but it was without real threat or belief and Timo Werner teed up Brennan Johnson for a late fourth on the counter. Follow live reaction from Manchester City vs Tottenham in our live blog, below.

64’ - Man City 0-3 Spurs

First change for Tottenham as captain Son is replaced by Brennan Johnson, the South Korean having been on international duty but also injured prior to that, so some minutes-managing there perhaps. Maddison has the armband now for the visitors.

Kulusevski counters once more, takes on his man and shoots - Ederson this time makes a fine save, high to his right.

60’ - Man City 0-3 Spurs

Rico Lewis has been booked to add to City’s frustrations. Spurs fans sing away in the stands but for City fans it’s just jeers and silence right now.

Haaland now spins in the box after a loose Bissouma touch - and whacks a curling shot onto the crossbar and over. First notable touch in a while and he almost gets City back in it.

56’ - Man City 0-3 Spurs

Richard Jolly:

“Manchester City came from 2-0 down at home to Tottenham to win 4-2 in January 2023, a night notable for Guardiola calling his team the ‘happy flowers’. This time, however, the third goal of the game has gone to Spurs. Pedro Porro was completely unmarked, while the influential Kulusevski made the goal with a fine run down the left. The horticultural references from Guardiola may be different tonight. Spurs, meanwhile, are 3-0 up in Manchester for the second time this season.”

GOAL! 52’ - Man City 0-3 Spurs

Wow - it’s three for Spurs! City again gift possession and this time a cross from the left - Kulusevski again, after taking on three players - finds Solanke far post, he controls and tees it up beautifully for Porro and the right-back absolutely smashes in another goal for Tottenham!

50’ - Man City 0-2 Spurs

Akanji bodies Solanke to ground and the frustration is clear from the fans and from Guardiola. City wanted a fast start from kick-off and they haven’t been allowed to do so.

46’ - Man City 0-2 Spurs

Ake for Stones is the half-time change for Man City, who are 52 without defeat here.

We’re underway for the second half.

Birthday hattrick for Madders?!

HT - City 0-2 Spurs

It was already a historic run - in a negative sense - for Guardiola last time out. Could it really go to five?

HT - City 0-2 Spurs

Half time and City are shellshocked here. They were totally dominant for 15 minutes, should have scored once or twice...and then found themselves two goals down.

What can Guardiola provide at the break?

45’ - Man City 0-2 Spurs

Three minutes added on. The home fans sounding very displeased at present, impatient when their team don’t get the ball in the box but also at Spurs slowing the game down a bit.

Walker goes in on Maddison forcefully and is lucky to escape without a booking.
