Brighton drew with Southampton at St Mary’s on Thursday, missing out on a chance to secure their place in next season’s Premier League.

Neal Maupay opened the scoring on 17 minutes as the visitors looked set to guarantee their survival, but Danny Ings struck his 20th league goal of the season shortly after the hour mark to ensure the points were shared.

What are the odds?

Southampton – 13/10

Draw – 5/2

Brighton – 5/2

Prediction

Both teams will want to get on the ball and control possession, which could lead to an open match with counter-attacks aplenty and chances at both ends. Saints are more clinical, so they win.

7 mins: Romeu flies into a challenge on Solly March and picks up a yellow card.

9 mins: Dan Burn gets the ball in the box and he picks out Maupay who shoots. His sot is blocked but the ball comes back to him and he snatches at the ball and puts his second shot over the bar.

12 mins: Solly March does well to run the ball to the byline and then he floats a cross into the box. Murray makes a nuisance of himself and the ball is headed out to Propper. Propper shoots but sends the ball over the crossbar.

15 mins: Brighton will secure their spot in the Premier League next season if they win tonight. Even a draw will put them further away from the relegation places.

Southampton have three attempts on goal blocked. Brighton look a little loose at the back.

17 mins: GOAL! Southampton 0 - 1 Brighton - (Maupay)

Woeful defending from Saints. Brighton throw the ball into the box. Murray flicks it on to Maupay. He lets the ball run past him before shooting with his left foot and finding the back of the net.

21 mins: Redmond wins a free kick in the middle of the park. Vestergaard punts it long into the box but Brighton defend it well.

24 mins: The players take the first drinks break of the game. Southampton will be confident they can score, Brighton haven't been the most disciplined at the back.

27 mins: Trossard delivers a corner into the box for Brighton but McCarthy comes and punches the ball clear.

30 mins: Vestergaard attempts a simple pass to Redmond but kicks it out of play instead. Sloppy work from Southampton who haven't gelled at all yet.

Michael Jones16 July 2020 20:46

33 mins: Trossard plays the ball up to Maupay who runs it into the box and goes down as he's challenged by Bednarek and Hojbjerg. It's a clear dive and the referee just lets play continue.
